Why is factory farming such a big deal?

Factory farming is the biggest cause of animal cruelty on the planet and every year we rear and slaughter over sixty billion animals for food. Animals confined to these tight spaces endure unimaginable suffering, create waste and threaten human health. It presents the risk of disease spreading and potentially new strains of disease emerging. Compassion in World Farming work tirelessly to end factory farming and promote a better way of protecting our environment and giving animals a better way of life.

    Wow this is quite moving!

Thank you. You are doing amazing work. Isn’t it true that without animal welfare legislation, without rules, market forces will create cost cutting and cruelty? Ideally we need a worldwide standard to create a fair market, but whatever, it would be amazing if the UK could lead the way by banning factory farms and bringing in compassion in farming. I’m all for that.

You sure about cows grazing get all their water from rainfall on the grass? Water use for stock is high but then milk is mainly water,

In Sweden we have an “ecological” organization, KRAV, which controls the production of meat and vegetables among its members. Certain criteria must be fulfilled for the KRAV-label on packaging. One of them is that animals must be fed organically grown food – and they must lead a good natural life! Other criteria are that no pesticides or other types of poison must be used. You pay a little more, but I rather eat a small piece of meat, and not every day, than lots of meat every day because it is cheap (= factory produced). Same for eggs. I want eggs from chicken walking freely around and outdoors when the weather allows (Sweden is cold in the winter). People who claim that KRAV-labelled food is too expensive could cut down on the chips and coke! Their own health would the benefit as well. Unfortunately, the shops only keep a very low amount of KRAV-labelled food items in comparison to factory produced food. They claim it is because people do not ask for it and that they think it is too expensive! The low amount is what causes the higher price! If they turned it all around, thereby “forcing” people to buy the organic food, they could lower the price! WHY IS THAT SO DIFFICULT TO GRASP?

Such an important issue. Thanks for making these videos.

Very much enjoyed working on this project. Philip: you and your team are doing a fantastic job of raising awareness of this issue. We need future generations to look beyond factory farming and to produce food not just humanely, but sustainably too. Not only does the current system cause unimaginable suffering to animals, but it also poses a real threat to human health. You are right – we can indeed feed the world without factory farming, which is why videos like this will make as many as people as possible to hear your message.

Really interesting debate. Thank you for bringing the issue to my attention in such an accessible manner. Will tell my friends about it; everyone should watch these clips!

Great work, Philip! I can’t wait for the next film.

hats off to compassion in world farming for banging the drum and getting people to wake up to the bad practices in farming. We need to eliminate these barbaric farming conditions and get worldwide government consensus to rid these places from the face of the earth. Eradication along with a fairer distribution of land would encourage and support thousands of new farmers who have a real passion for real farming.

Excellent video, this should be widely publicised. Could it go on mainstream TV as a short clip?

WOW! This is a fantastic factual video on the very thing that all of us are trying to get across to the rest of the world! Our animals are not here to endure this existence for our greedy choices in food. These animals are robbed of all their natural behaviour and are suffering their whole lives. It is NOT natural or humane in anyway. It’s well overdue for this issue to be stopped and humans need to do this through not buying factory farm products and therefore increase the demand for free range, cruelty free food. Imagine being kept in an elevator with 10 other people for the whole of your life, so cramped that you are sometimes on top of each-other, living in your own waste and suffering joint pain/muscle pain with no relief, the door never opening until it’s time to be slaughtered. When people start to empathise with how dreadful that would be, only then will we seek to change in numbers! GREAT WORK, and a very important issue!

Compelling communication of the story behind the meat on the plate.

Seeing animals crowded together in such miserable conditions outrages and deeply saddens me. I recognize that the “politically correct” way to combat animal cruelty is to focus not on an impassioned plea for animals’ well-being, but rather on other issues of human concern such as protecting the environment. While I respect and appreciate this approach, I wish that we could simply use the argument that it’s plain wrong to treat animals this way! It should be quite enough to demand that animals be treated humanely for the sake of animals’ happiness and well-being, and not just because it makes better environmental or economic sense for humans.

It is wonderful to see someone taking the initiative to bring us an awareness regarding factory farming. I feel deeply saddened for the animals and they way they live each and everyday of their lives in total confinement. I hope to see all animals humanely raised in the very near future, not only for their well being but for ours as well. There should be a reality show about Factory Farming and people would definitely change the way they eat! Laws need to be in place to protect the animals from just being food for profit. I believe people are moving in the right direction we just need to do it faster for the sake of the animals. Thank you for your effort, don’t stop.

I am appalled at the cruelty of humans. My mother always said the only animal that prays OR HAS THE NEED TO PRAY IS MAN! How true I see this is today.

  • Lois

This is a great video, appealing to the three opportunities for interest..animal suffering on factory farms, environmental concerns and health impacts of eating animals raised in confinement. I will share this video with my group Compassionate Carnivores (www.compassionate-carnivores.org) and on my facebook page VIP..Veggie in Progress. Most people care about one of these three impacts caused by factory farming and may be interested in eating less meat in an effort to help in the area that interests them. Lois
